Distribuzione e habitat

Tutte le mwiaspecie del genere sono diffuse nell'mwiqOceano Atlantico orientale tranne mwigT. cornutus presente lungo le coste mwiwpacifiche del mwjaCile. Nel mwjqmar Mediterraneo vivono le specie mwjgT. araneus, mwjwT. draco e mwkaT. radiatus.

Sono pesci tipici di fondi sabbiosi ed acque poco profonde del mwkgpiano infralitorale, alcune specie possono raggiungere il mwkwpiano circalitorale superiore. Si infossano nel sedimento e attendono la preda immobili.

Veleno

Tutte le specie sono dotate di spine velenose sulla prima mwlgpinna dorsale e sull'mwlwopercolo mwmabranchiale in grado di infliggere punture molto dolorose.

Tassonomia

La specie mwmwmwnaEchiichthys vipera talvolta viene attribuita a questo genere con il nome di mwnqTrachinus vipera.
